Doug Coil

Ohio had the first attempt at points, but a Shaun Davies penalty kick was missed. Sacramento when given the opportunity was successful in two Mirco Bergamasco attempts giving Sacramento an early 6-0 lead.

Ohio would answer back as Davies quick ball from a scrum resulted in a Mason Baum try. Davies slotted and Ohio took a 7-6 lead.

Soon after Langilangi Haupeakui was shown yellow on a late tackle on Peter Malcolm. Ohio could not take advantage as Davies kick was missed again. Ohio would take advantage on Sacramento being down a man as Jamie Mackintosh powered to within 5 meters of in-goal. After a scrum to Ohio, Kalm picked and offloaded to Davies to Spike Davis for a try. Ohio lead 12-6.

A Sacramento attack prior to halftime had Bergamasco breaking inside Ohio’s 22. A penalty was awared to Sacramento who kicked to touch for a lineout turned into a maul. It went to within a meter of scoring, but a Jamie Mackintosh penalty resulted in his recieving a yellow card. A 5 meter scrum to Sacramento ensued and Chris Saint went in for a try. The conversion was missed and at halftime the score was Sacramento 11 to 12 for Ohio.

The second half had attackes by both sides before a John Quill shoulder charge on Davies resulted in a trip to the bin. Roland Suniula then drove inside the 22. Offloads from Davies to Mackintosh to Filippo Ferrarini reulted in a try. JP Eloff converted and Ohio increase their lead to 19-11.

Eloff had another penalty attempt, but the kick went wide. Later a 5 meter scrum to Ohio resulted in a Kalm try. The kick was missed, but Ohio increase their lead to 24-11 with twelve minutes left.

Ohio would add to their total after a Sacramento penalty had Ohio kicking to touch. Attacking from a lineout, Mason Baum soon had his second try. Eloff converted from inside touch for a 31-11 win.

With the win, Ohio kept pace with San Diego who had won earlier. Both teams narrowed the gap between first place Denver. Ohio travels to San Diego next week and both teams hope that Sacramento wins against Denver.

The entire rugby community will be thinking about Shaun Davies, who was injured attempting a tackle. Our thoughts are with him.
